Salinger, the theme of reading spills into most every aspect of the novel. Reading occurs so much, in fact, that there is little room to move within the story without running into the subject. The two main characters, Franny and Zooey Glass, frequently engage in the act of reading. The narrator has pieced together the story by reading the different interpretations provided by the storys characters. But, this novel is not only intrinsically about the act of reading; it also engages the reader in active reading. As readers of this novel, we become active participants in the reading in order to fill in certain gaps, or indeterminacy, left by the author. As such, reader response criticism provides a means for understanding the use of reading in the novel.According to Stanley Fish, a major feature of reader response criticism is that reading is not a matter of discovering what the text means, but a process of experiencing what it does to you (Eagleton 85). In Franny and Zooey, Franny reads The Way of the Pilgrim, a religious text describing the act of praying incessantly. Because of Frannys intense desire for enlightenment, she follows the books instructions and prays constantly. Intellectually, Franny sees this intense desire for personal satisfaction to be in conflict with her morals. She says, Just because Im choosey about what I want in this case, enlightenment, or peace, instead of money or prestige or fame or any of those things doesnt mean Im not as egotistical and self-seeking as everybody else (Salinger 148). As a result, Franny has a mental breakdown. Her need for religious answers informs how she reads the text. She is looking fo r instruction as she reads.On the other hand, Frannys brother Zooey, who also reads the work, is not reading for instruction, but merely for information. When Zooey describes the plot of the book to his mother, he says, The aim of both little books is supposedly to wake everybody up to the need and benefits of saying the Jesus Prayer incessantly (Salinger 112). His interpretation is a fairly objective academic response to the books agenda. It is obvious that he is not looking for a religious epiphany from the book. By reading it with an academic lens, Zooey experiences a totally different understanding of the text than Franny. This narration supports the reader response concept that words have no meaning until they have been read. Until Franny and Zooey read The Way of the Pilgrim, it was nothing more than black marks on a white page It had no impact on their lives, nothing more than a book in an unused room in a Manhattan apartment. Once read, those black marks conjured en ough meaning to contribute to a mental breakdown.Although words receive meaning once they are read, this meaning is not necessarily a static interpretation. As Terry Eagleton wrote, The process of reading is always a dynamic one, a complex movement and unfolding through time (77). At the opening of the second chapter of Franny and Zooey, we find Zooey in the bathtub, reading a letter from his brother Buddy the morning after Frannys breakdown. It was a long, typewritten, four-year old letter that had obviously been taken out of its envelope and unfolded and refolded [and] was actually torn in several places (Salinger 56). Zooey has obviously read and reread this letter a number of times since he received it. According to Lois Tyson, the act of rereading, results in [the] revision of our understanding of characters and events (159) because each time we reread we bring different experiences to our interpretation of the text. In the letter to Zooey, Buddy attempts to explain the r easons he and Seymour, the oldest Glass brother, chose to educate Franny and Zooey the way they did. Buddy wrote, Dr. Suzuki says somewhere that to be in a state of pure consciousness satori is to be with God before he said, Let there be light. Seymour and I thought it might be a good thing to hold back this light from you and Franny ,the arts, sciences, classics, languages till you were both able at least to conceive of a state of being where the mind knows the source of all light (Salinger 65). Frannys breakdown adds a new dimension to the meaning that Zooey has created from earlier readings of this letter, therefore enabling a new interpretation of the events and characters of the letter. While one can only speculate what meaning Zooey placed on the letter before and after the breakdown, what is significant is the act of Zooey reading, showing that his initial speculations generate[d] a frame of reference within which to interpret what comes next, but what [came] next may r etrospectively transform [his] original understanding (Eagleton 77).We find Zooey reading elsewhere in the novel as well. After he fails to talk Franny out of her depression, he leaves her crying in the living room and heads to the room once shared by Buddy and Seymour. There, surrounded by piles of books, he reads quotes written on a wall by his brothers. Salinger describes the reading as rather like walking through an emergency station set up in a flood area (175). In a way, the quote wall is an emergency station for Zooey, a crisis hotline. After reading a while, he picks up the private phone line in the bedroom and calls Franny, pretending to be Buddy, armed with new information to help make a connection with her.It is also important to note that Zooey is an actor, and what is an actor first but a professional reader? Reading, then giving meaning to the words, is a large part of what an actor does for a living. Then through rehearsal, an actors character becomes more auth entic and more believable. Zooey, as an actor, is rehearsing in Buddy and Seymours room. His initial reading is a dry run through; Zooey is trying to derive some sort of meaning to pass along to his sister. Then, with his hands drooping low over his brow, Zooey sat for a good twenty minutes (Salinger 180). During these twenty minutes, Zooey is going over his lines, creating his character before he tries again to reach his sister. Zooey recognizes that Buddy is the one who should be talking to Franny. During his first attempt to talk to Franny, Zooey says, Im no damn good for this Shall I try to get Buddy on the phone? (Salinger 149). Zooey understands that in order to have an impact on his sister, he has to be more like Buddy. By reading Buddys quotes, Zooey can play the part of his brother, and in turn, become good for this.Franny and Zooey are not the only readers in the novel. Their older brother, Buddy, narrates the second section of Franny and Zooey, and also acts as a reader of sorts. In an experiment performed by reader-response theorist David Bleich, he discovered that students writing an objective essay would focus on the same elements of the text they would focus on if they were writing a personal response to the text (Tyson 167). So, even when we think were writing traditional objective interpretations of literary texts, the sources of those interpretations lie in the personal responses evoked by the text (Tyson 167). Buddy received portions of the text in somewhat harrowingly private settings, by the three player-characters themselves (Salinger 49). The three player-characters are Buddys brother, sister, and mother. He would, of course, have some sort of personal response to each of these three storytellers. An objective reading of the text would be impossible, by extension preventing an objective narration. An indication of Buddys subjectivity occurs at the very end of the novel. During Zooeys phone call to Franny, Zooey finally s ays something that makes a connection with her. In Buddys words, it was to Franny as if all of what little or much wisdom there is in the world were suddenly hers she seemed to know just what to do next,too. She got into the bed. For some minutes, before she fell into a deep, dreamless sleep, she just lay quiet, smiling at the ceiling (Salinger 201). Without taking the narrators personal feelings into account, this ending seems to be a happy one. Franny finds peace, her life can go on. But we must not forget that it was Buddy and Seymour who got Franny into this predicament in the first place with the experimental religious education they implemented on Franny and Zooey. As a brother, Buddy needs to know that Franny found her way out of the breakdown, so he can live without the guilt of her mental demise. Knowing this, a second reading of the ending passage could be interpreted quite differently. We are never told if Franny ever gets out of bed again. Maybe she has slipped further into her breakdown, and the smiling indicates her body is no longer connected with her plaguing mental anguish. Buddy never indicates determinately what has happened with Franny.To be sure, determinate versus indeterminate meaning is a common theme among reader-response critics. Gaps left by the author force the reader to be an active participant in constructing hypotheses about the meaning of the text (Eagleton 76). Eagleton also asserts that the text itself is really no more than a series of cues to the reader (76). Buddy is a reader within the text, receiving these cues in the form of conversations and letters with his family in hideously spaced installments (Salinger 49). He then uses these different texts, not in a linear fashion, but cumulatively, to construct the language into meaning. His most recent understanding of the events is what we read as the novel Franny and Zooey.As readers, we go through the same process of cumulative meaning-making to understand the novel. We read backwards and forwards simultaneously, predicting and recollecting (Eagleton 77). We first learn about the members of the Glass family through a footnote at the beginning of Buddys narration. At this point we have no other references with which to understand these characters. As the book unfolds and we learn more about the characters, we must turn back to that footnote to fill in the blanks created by our continued reading of the text. The details of the footnote could have just as easily been included in the text, but by making the passage a footnote, it is quite easy to find and flip back to. This indicates that the author is aware that reading is a complex movement and unfolding though time (Eagleton 77) and that he expects us to want to return to this passage. This suggests that stylistically, Salinger is attempting to promote active reading.As Franny and Zooey unfolds in the minds of its readers, we begin to understand the complexity of the reading in the novel. The characters use reading as a method of understanding the world around them. The narrator uses reading as a method of piecing together an event, and ultimately uses reading to convey his interpretation of the story. As readers, we understand that reading a situation does not just mean comprehending the words on the page, but creating meaning based on these words and the gaps that invite us to create the varied but necessary filler. The novel Franny and Zooey offers us an excellent text by which we can both witness and apply reader-response criticism. As the baby boomer generation moves into their senior years, they may not be prepared for the psychological challenges that their predecessors experienced before them (Daniel, 1994). As Todd Nelson describes in his article, Ageism: Prejudice Against Our Feared Future Self, the old are treated as â€Å"second-class citizens with nothing to offer society† (Nelson, 2005, p. 209). A research model concluded that older persons in the United States were perceived as â€Å"warm, but incompetent† (Nelson, 2005, p. 215). Research suggests that the stereotyping of the older population is much more severe than originally thought, making it necessary for further research to find ways to reduce the disdain towards aging (Nelson, 2005). The negative attitude associated with aging has not always been this way. Historically, older individuals were once revered, and admired as they were considered wise and experienced. They were the historians of the past, teaching the customs and values to the new, emerging generations (Nelson, 2005). The degeneration towards the old occurred by way of technology through the invention of the printing press which allowed duplication of stories in mass distribution, making the elder’s status less significant. Another factor was the industrial revolution as progress dictated where families lived. This new mobility requirement did not settle well with the less adaptive and older generation, breaking apart the traditional family structure in order to secure employment elsewhere. Growing companies needed strength and adaptability during that time so the younger generation excelled professionally whereas experienced, older applicants were less valued. The advancements in medicine also extended a person’s life expectancy, prolonging the caregiver’s responsibility to its elder (Nelson, 2005). In Todd Nelson’s article, Ageism: Prejudice against Our Feared Future self, he discusses the social prejudices associated with aging, and the subtle ways those prejudices are conveyed. His primary focus is our aging population of baby boomers, and how they will be affected by being stereotyped in ways that are patronizing and degrading (Nelson, 2005). In an effort to thwart such negative attitudes, Jere Daniel, the author of Learning to Love Growing Old, describes a â€Å"vanguard† movement that is committed to changing the way aging is perceived. These individuals have evoked the term, â€Å"conscious aging† which promotes awareness and acceptance of the aging process as we move through each stage of life. The supporters of this movement confer that aging is not a curable disease, and it cannot be solved by spending billions of dollars on preventing its process or its end (Daniel, 1994). Another supporter of changing the way aging is conveyed is author, Margaret Cruiksbank, of the book, Learning to be Old. In her book she is a proponent of changing the way the aging process is described. Her position is that the underlying meaning of popular terms to describe aging weakens its value. She denotes that the term â€Å"successful aging† is a false phrase for the elderly as it â€Å"masks both the wish to continue mid-life indefinitely and the white, Middle-class, Western values of researchers, causing them to emphasize productivity, effectiveness and independence† (Cruiksbank, 2009, p. 2). She also concludes that the term â€Å"productive† aging symbolizes â€Å"economic usefulness and social conformity† (Cruiksbank, 2009, p. 2), especially for the female gender. More importantly, these terms can be used to measure. This ability to measure is subjective to the questioner and an individual’s self-worth. She suggests the term â€Å"aging comfortably† as it signifies easiness, and a â€Å"faint hint† of pleasurable self-indulgence which may not have been possible in younger years (Cruiksbank, 2009, p. 3). There has been decades of research examining what it referred to as â€Å"automatic categorization† (Nelson, 2005. p. 207). Researchers describe this as an essential trait in humans that is a primal response to physical characteristics, such as race, gender, and age, that automatically prompts emotional responses and prejudices. This type of categorization sets the foundation for stereotyping (Nelson, 2005). The aging community is faced with an array of negative stereotypes that affects their independence as well as their self-perception. Many times the negativity is hidden, almost overlooked as it in an unconscious gesture unbeknownst to either participant. Nelson discusses the use of patronizing language as a form of negative socialization. He states that researchers define its usage as â€Å"overaccomodation and baby talk† (Nelson, 2005, p. 209). This type of language is based on the stereotype that individuals suffer from hearing loss to a limited or degenerate intellect as a result of growing old (Nelson, 2005). Another form of stereotyping that has a debilitating effect on the aging adult’s self-esteem is a term called â€Å"infantilization† (Nelson, 2005, p. 210). This is described as a process that occurs over time as the aging adult relinquishes their independence, eventually leaving them to believe that they can no longer do for themselves. Researchers have found that this is prevalent in elders that have been over accommodated. The end result is that it not only affects the elder person but burdens their caretaker as well (Nelson, 2005). Another prejudice that is common is segregation of the old (Cruiksbank, 2009). Cruiksbank notes that even people over sixty five have a disdain for their peers, saying â€Å"they do not want to be around all those people† which may be their way of unconsciously avoiding their own mortality (Cruiksbank, 2009, p. 10). She states that distancing themselves may be a way they preserve their autonomy. Cruiksbank sees this as a form of denial, and also counterproductive as she eels solidarity needs to be exemplified by the old especially in this time of their lives. Gereontological research has also found other common patterns among the elderly and their peers. In another attempt to demonstrate independence, the elderly tend to generalize geriatric health issues. They segregate themselves by expressing how fortunate they are not to be suffering the same doomed fate (Cruiksb ank, 2009). All forms of media reinforce negative stereotypes associated with aging (Daniel, 1994). By as early as six years old, negative stereotypes have already formed about aging. These stereotypes continue throughout our lives, and are subconsciously accepted without question. Daniel concludes that society has no role models that favor growing old. A nursing home ad with a dialogue that emulates the aging parent as a problem or burden further acerbates the stigma. Culture and media are designed to postpone the evitable as it is geared towards staying young, and delivers that message from fashion to health (Daniel, 1994). The result of these stereotypes is that as we age, impending doom invades the individual’s thoughts. In an effort to conform to culture’s idea of individualism, the aging population perpetually seeks an elusive youth, thereby denying their mind and bodies the right to age (Daniel, 1994). It is not surprising then as the body begins to breakdown, that the aging person feels embarrassed and insignificant (Cruikshank, 2009). There is an ongoing movement to re-adjust society’s perception of what it means to age (Daniel, 1994). In an effort to shift the mindset of America’s aging, non-institutionalized studies have been done in American communities to determine the intellectual and cognitive effects of their aging population. The results concluded that â€Å"physical and mental decline is not evitable† Daniel, 1994). As the aging population grasps at their â€Å"desire to have meaning† in their lives, more attention needs to be focused on the positive influences that can enhance their daily existence. These influences include a positive attitude along with making healthy choices for themselves such as food, physical activity and recreation (Kerschner and Pegues, 1998). One way to improve the aging process is to be proactive in developing a healthy lifestyle that includes good eating habits and physical activity. Research has concluded that the mind is a powerful tool in creating reality so protecting one’s health can be a precept to a fighting off future ailments (Kerschner and Pegues, 1998). The choice to give back to the community creates a meaningful and positive response in many ways. The benefit of socially connecting in a structured atmosphere lends opportunity to share not only wisdom but to develop new relationships that otherwise would not have occurred (Kerschner and Pegues, 1998). Studies have concluded that people who remain active have a clearer sense of who they are and what value they hold in society as well as their community (Kerschner and Pegues, 1998). For every beginning, there must be an end. There is term called vertical axis which describes the mind-body experience when an infant first enters the world. It is believed that prior to a person’s birth, the mind and body are not aware of each other but as soon as they arrive, both are encapsulated by â€Å"sensation and emotion† as the two entities meet for the first time (Carvalho, 2008, p. 4). With the help of a mother’s touch, their union becomes a â€Å"seamless ensemble† (Carvalho, 2008, p. 4). The two live together, as one, for many years. It is not until the last stage of life, do they find themselves encapsulated by â€Å"sensation and emotion† again as now they have grown apart, separated as the aging body or mind is no longer able to oblige the other. They spend the rest of their days laboring until they can agree to leave together, in death. Fear of aging can ignite or dim the remainder of a person’s life. There is an array of products, books, and doctors promising new ways to reinvent the old self. In America, we are driven by the desire to stay young and because of this truth; the aging person experiences certain prejudices. Though, despite the adversity, aging can be a catalyst to many wonderful and positive experiences that could only happen because one is old. Get connected is a phrase that we have grown accustomed to hearing and seeing in the 21st century. With technology developing faster than ever, the digital world is (literally) at our fingertips. Some might say that the introduction of social networking has helped to bring people closer together. I am going to point out some of these, though the online communities may have a likeness to real-life societies, they are in fact nothing but numb conceptions of our day to day lives fueled by self-pride and egoism. With our reliance on social media sites such as Facebook actually cutting us from real-life society, its a sad truth that mankind is looking at a very forlorn future. By definition, the term digital represents values of a physical quantity expressed as a series of digits: 0 and 1. So on the opposite end of the spectrum, humans are identified as having character, weaknesses, imperfections, and fragility attributes that characterize us as a species like no other on this planet. Dont get me wrong, I am a firm believer that words, speech and song can convey a range of human emotions but, in my opinion, doing so eloquently requires aptitude. In spite of this, you will see a number people popping up on social media sites documenting their lives and feelings as though they were a best friend or their private diary. Nowadays, were less likely to hear someone say: I cant wait to tell my friends, and more likely to hear: I cant wait to put this on Facebook. So why has Facebook suddenly become everyones best friend? The younger generation of today perceives Facebook as being a part of everyday life and has become addicted to consulting news feeds and notifications. In this day and age, technology seems to get in the way of flourishing friendships. The days are gone from the days when one could spend time chatting and getting to know a friend; all it takes is to have your friend request approved and then you can find out almost anything about that person (where they live, whether they are in a relationship, where they work, and what their favorite quote is, and so on.) Not only is it affecting the nature of human interaction, our heavy dependence on social media sites has also been proven to result in children and adults alike doing fewer outdoor activities as well as studying and working less. Peop le are feeling more connected online, but very alone in real life. Society is becoming obsessed and is sharing too much information on the internet and spending pointless hours on it when they should be spending time on more important things. Despite the fact that technology now allows a person to communicate with lots of people all over the world, in reality, no matter how many friends you have on social networks like Facebook, they still result in the same thing; a technological bubble which keeps you isolated from real human contact and real human interaction. These virtual friends cannot adequately satisfy your needs, wants and desires in the long-term. Technology has the potential to connect friends and family. Unfortunately, it can also cause us to miss out on opportunities and experiences that would make our lives richer and more meaningful. Addictive by nature, social media sites are impacting negatively on our societies. This can be seen every day on the news with increasing cases of cyber-bullying, harassment, theft and sexual crimes, meaning that our community is not as together as we like to think it is. It is a scary fact that numerous teens with Facebook accounts dont fully understand the implications of having a public profile thus making themselves vulnerable to danger. To them, each of their Facebook friends is someone to be trusted and perhaps have some fun chatting to; however, the frightening truth is that they could really be talking to anyone. With the number of hacking incidents also on the up, can we ever be confident that our friends are who they say they are? Its horrifying to see that so many people check in on Facebook too, freely announcing to a long list of acquaintances their whereabouts. I would say no but we tend to lean more on social technology then we realize. Not only that, we all feel bad turning down friend requests and removing friends from our contacts which is why the numbers are misleading and have a tendency to spiral out of control. A recent study showed that Facebook users are seen as more attractive as they near 300 friends, but that this magnetism weakens if they exceed this by too many. Id be willing to bet that most users only talk to around 10%of this total on a regular basis and could count no more than five (excluding family) as true close friends. Studies suggest that our newfound love for Facebook is due to the reward center in our brain triggering pleasurable feelings with each Like or positive comment we receive. But by putting some of our most intimate life events in the public domain, we are encouraging as much negativity as positivity, inviting others to pass comments and judge us. Whether premeditated or not, the decision to post a photo, status update or to share a link, could be a simple cry for attention. No longer satisfied with human relations, we are psychologically (and egoistically) building our own modified, digital representation of ourselves in a fantasy world. Yet, with social media references all around us, it is impossible to escape the grip that technology has on todays society. Our generation is overdosing on digital media. Members of the community are lacking from everything that makes them human weaknesses, imperfections, fragility all that we see are the manipulated, faultless versions of people online. I cant help but think that, in this new technologically advanced era, we are more alone than ever.Theres no doubt that technology can bring positives to our relationships. Just think about how many people today meet their partners online. But are these relationships as real as finding someone at a local supermarket and taking the time to explore each persons likes and dislikes. People are genetically designed to gain satisfaction from meaningful relationships with real people, and as a result, receive many benefits from doing so. Even from birth human contact is essential for normal growth and development. There is something about real human interaction that completes us, as without it, ou r body and life slowly starts to break down and becomes less sociable. Start and Finish activities can be restricted by imposing the dates which affects the completion of the activities. Many other constraints are also present in the project management software but in our case Start No earlier than and theFinish no later than constraints are specifically used. Project customer, sponsor and stakeholders dictate the major milestones and affect the certain deliverable components to a specific date. The scheduled dates become the expected dates and only can be changed through the approval. Milestones only provide the schedules interface and are not part of the project data base. The budget and timeline are kept on track, if it is not on track then manager takes immediate action to cure the problem. For the project schedule a baseline was established, this baseline is used as starting point and performance on the project is also measured. This technique is used during the project execution when the project is on track. Cost Performance Baseline costs compared and variances are shown between these two variances. Earned Value Management (EVM) technique is used to monitor the IT projects in some ways as other projects. But seldom ever/when men are slain, does the murder-spear sink/ but briefest while, though the bride be fair! † It is quite clear that this woman will probably fail even in her modest role, as a peace maker, according to the prediction of the anonymous author. Wealhtheow, queen to Hrothgar is the only woman who is given a voice in the poem at all. Her two speeches, one addressed to her king and the other to Beowulf mark very important moments in the poem, and she almost seems to have a certain power. She advises her king not to adopt Beowulf as a son, since he already has two sons of his owns, and pledges him to his word by offering a cup. She then goes to Beowulf and offers another symbolic object, a neck-ring as a reward for his feats of heroism and urges him to fight again and confront death: â€Å"Enjoy this neck-ring with safety, Beowulf, beloved youth, and make use of this corselet, of our people’s treasure; prosper well, declare yourself with strength, and be kind of counsel to these youths. I shall remember to reward you for that. You have brought it about that men shall praise you from far and near for a long time to come†¦. Here every nobleman is true to the other, mild of heart, loyal to his lord; the thanes are united, the people willing; the wine-drinking warriors do as I bid. † (â€Å"Beowulf†, 1216-1231) In both these instances, the Danish queen seems to hold some power over the events and the world of men, since she performs such symbolic acts and since she herself declares that the warriors obey her. However, it is quite obvious that she also is an instrument just like the other women mentioned in the text. She does not perform her own will, but only acts as an ideal tool for men that takes the cup from one of them and gives it to another. It can be said that Wealhtheow is merely a mediator and a peace bringer in the poem, just like the other women represented. As Gillian Overing remarks, in Beowulf women serve only as mediators for the alliances between men, either through marriage or through symbolic, minor acts: â€Å"While we have no way of guessing at Beowulf’s sexuality, or at the poet’s or the hero’s personal views on marriage, we cannot ignore the strength of expressed masculine desire in the poem. Intensity and passion are located in the bonds of loyalty and friendship forged between men, and marriage is valued as an extension of this larger emotional context. †(Overing, 72) Thus, Wealhtheow is an ideal woman in Beowulf insomuch as she serves the purposes in men’s world, her will simply coinciding with the desires of men. In the last story of The Decameron, one of the very few that actually have a â€Å"happy† ending, Griselda the modest daughter of a shepherd is married to the Marquis of Saluzzo. Her role in the story is strikingly similar to that of Wealhtheow in Beowulf, even if the context is very different. In the story Gualtieri is a typical man, who as shown from the start, is preoccupied only with men’s business, such as hunting, and despises the idea of marriage: â€Å"†¦having neither wife nor child, [he] passed his time in naught else but in hawking and hunting, and of taking a wife and begetting children had no thought; wherein he should have been accounted very wise†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Boccaccio, 837) As the author declares, the idea of taking a wife would be completely unwise, suggesting that women are merely troublesome acquisitions for men. However, Gualtieri is married at last, but chooses the daughter of a shepherd, so as to make sure she will be more likely to obey him in everything: â€Å"He then asked her, whether, if he took her to wife, she would study to comply with his wishes, and be not wroth, no matter what he might say or do, and be obedient†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Boccaccio, 840) After a few happy years, he starts to deliberately torment his wife, through cruel acts, such as taking her children away and making her believe they are dead or humiliating her for her base condition in front of everyone. All this is done of course to try the wife’s patience and her limits in her total obedience to her husband. In the end, he makes her believe he is going to marry again, but instead brings her daughter, and the story ends well. The moral is quite evident: Boccaccio attempted to portray his idea of the perfect woman, that is the woman is nothing else but an instrument of man’s will. Griselda is so modest as to consider herself unworthy of any kind of regard, and so patient as to bear in silence her husband cruelty: â€Å"My lord, do with me as thou mayst deem best for thine own honour and comfort, for well I wot that I am of less account than they, and unworthy of this honourable estate †¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Boccaccio, 842) Her similarity to Wealhtheow is now apparent: both the queen in Beowulf and Griselda are ideal women only because they serve men properly, as instruments, that do not have any will of their own. Thus, the heroines of the two texts, although they appear in very different contexts, are obviously represented in the same way, that is, as instruments that are in harmony with men’s affairs and desires. Their perfection comes precisely from their nullity as characters, as persons of their own will. Both of them are wives first of all, and are defined only through this role. Although their authors intended a positive representation of women through them, they are in fact just useful devices for men, with no real consistence of their own.
